Virginia Contractor Licensing Requirements

You should check with your state regarding contractor licensing requirements and if applicable, an attorney. The state of Virginia requires any contractor who writes contracts with a value of $1,000 or more to be licensed through the Board of Contractors. This is not to be confused with a local business license which is also required by every city in which you perform business.

The following information attached by pdf file is provided for contractors interested in doing business within the state of Virginia only and was updated December 19, 2011. To the best of our knowledge this information is up to date and accurate but we suggest you contact the Department of Professional and Occupation Regulation at (804) 367-8500 to determine if there are any other updates that you should be aware of.

Virginia License Classifications are as followed:

Class A contractors perform or manage construction, removal, repair or improvements when the total value referred to in a single contract or project is $120,000 or more or the total value of all such construction, removal, repair or improvements undertaken by such person within any twelve-month period is $750,000 or more. To obtain this license you must take an 8 hour business course plus pass a written examination.

Class B contractors perform or manage construction, removal, repair or improvements when the total value referred to in a single contract or project is $10,000 or more, but less than $120,000 or the total value of all such construction, removal, repair or improvements undertaken by such person within any twelve-month period is $150,000 or more but less than $750,000. To obtain this license you must take an 8 hour business course plus pass a written examination.

Class C contractors perform or manage construction, removal, repair or improvements when the total value referred to in a single contract or project is over $1,000 but no more than $10,000 or the total value of all such construction, removal, repair or improvements undertaken by such person within any twelve-month period is no more than $150,000.
