Safety First
Mid-Atlantic Pools does not manufacture or endorse diving boards or slides. Any use or installation of diving boards or slides must be in strict compliance with each such equipment manufacture's specifications and recommendations, the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals Standards, as well as all local building codes and regulations; including recommendations from the American Red Cross and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. "No Diving" signage must be installed around the perimeter of a pool in accordance with the instructions provided by the liner manufacturer.
SUPERVISION
Constant supervision is the primary precaution for which there is no substitute. Never take your eyes off a child when he or she is near or in a body of water. All other safety precautions should be used in addition to constant adult supervision. Do not consider your child "drown-proof" because you enrolled them in a swimming class.
TOYS
Toys, tricycles and other playthings should be stored away from the pool or spa area. A favorite toy left near the water can be a very strong attraction for a child.
SUBSTANCE FREE
Never use a pool or spa while, or after consuming alcohol or any drugs. Consult a physician if taking any medication prior to swimming or using a spa.
DIVING
Know the depth of water prior to diving, and never dive into shallow water. Never dive into an above ground pool. Learn safe diving.
FENCES AND GATES
Fencing should be at least four feet high and all gates leading in the pool area should be self latching and closing. Check local regulations for specific requirements in your area.
DOOR AND GATE ALARMS
Many devices are available that attach to pool/spa access doors and gates that will sound a loud chime when opened and closed.
PERIMETER AND MOTION ALARMS
Infrared detector beams installed around the perimeter of a pool or water motion alarms placed in the water are among some affordable alarm systems that can be installed by the pool owner.
SAFETY COVERS
Safety covers for pools and locking covers for spas will keep children and animals out of the pool/spa when not in use.
ROPES, LIFE RINGS, SHEPHERD CROOKS
Rope and float lines placed across the pool alert swimmers to the separation of the deep and shallow parts of the pool. Rescue equipment such as life rings and shepherd's crooks can be used to pull someone in trouble to safety.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
Learning CPR, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is a skill that may save a life. The local YMCA/YWCA, the Red Cross and many local hospitals offer classes. Keep emergency phone numbers readily available, preferably posted on a sign by the pool/spa area.
PORTABLE TELEPHONE
A cordless or poolside phone means parents do not have to leave children unattended while they answer the phone. It is also helpful when calling for an emergency.
COMMON SENSE
Use common sense when using a pool or spa. Horse playing and rough playing in or around a pool should not be allowed. Use diving boards and slides the way they are intended to be used and according to manufacturer instructions. Do not use electrical equipment while near or in a body of water or while wet. Know that surfaces get slippery when wet.
