At Mid-Atlantic Pools our primary focus is customer service more than anything else. When our company managed downsizing through the recession it became a delicate exercise of meeting not only our needs but those of our customers. We identified the fact that nearly all new construction companies would reach beyond its reasonable boundaries to find new business and this trend would only satisfy the builder’s short term needs. The unforeseen problem with that business model was that it created long term logistical errors for the construction company. Fuel prices rose and staff was reduced across the board causing trip and labor charges to rise, especially for service and repair fleets. For a construction company to be truly successful it needs to affordably reach its customers for service and repair as needed and in a reasonable amount of time.

Some will say that these are all reasonable conclusions for any business but that’s just not the case when it comes to swimming pool construction. Our industry wants to build where ever there’s an opportunity which isn’t different than any other industry. But if you compare swimming pools to sun rooms you will find that sun room companies are traditionally more consistent with building in and near the city in which they are established and rarely will go beyond those boundaries.

With Mid-Atlantic Pools being based out of Smithfield Virginia it was decided during our downsizing that the corporate office would only serve its immediate surrounding area. We agreed to travel east into Suffolk but that it wasn’t in our best interest to reach beyond those boundaries. Why should we risk trying to travel twenty minutes across a bridge that connects us to another region only to get stuck on a bridge for thirty minutes or more? It was a logistical decision and one that wasn’t made lightly but it paid off in ways we never expected!

There were whispers within the swimming pool industry that we would never survive in such a confined territory but we stayed true to our mission of better service and best quality with no excuse! One of the upsides to our new business model was that it allowed more time for creativity within our company that not only benefitted our customers but the company itself. Mid-Atlantic Pools found itself doing business in ways that it never had before and unfortunately I can’t go into too much more detail because doing so would release our trade secrets. Let’s just say that everyone is much happier with the changes that took place! We’ve become a less stressful work environment which is something that our employees have grown to appreciate. The added bonus is that our customers are constantly surrounded by happier people who not only want to show up on time but can!

I’d like to think that Mid-Atlantic Pools has become infectious in a great way. It must be; because in the 4th Quarter of 2011 we adopted two existing swimming pool companies and brought them in under the Mid-Atlantic Pools umbrella. In simple terms we franchised our business model by taking existing companies that were more like what we used to be and turned them into who we are today! A happier place to work with defined boundaries and a tested business model that benefits both our customers and company alike.

With the addition of our Chesapeake and Virginia Beach office locations we can now safely build and service swimming pools throughout Tidewater without sacraficing quality and happiness! When our only office made the decision some time ago not to cross a bridge we never envisioned that we would have an office just on the other side of it as a solution.
